Szafnauer advised Red Bull to extend Perez`s contract.
Former Formula 1 team director Otmar Szafnauer, who worked with Sergio Perez at Force India / Racing Point, believes that the Mexican remains the optimal partner for Max Verstappen at Red Bull.


I was asked who I would replace Checo with in Christian Horner`s place. I know Cheko well, so I answered: I would replace Cheko with Cheko. If I were Christian, I would leave him for next season.


Let`s not forget that in the first season [-2021] Max won [the title] partly thanks to Checo, partly thanks to circumstances.


Some races led [Verstappen] to this victory, and it was then that Checo was dubbed the Minister of Defense in Mexico. He did it. Yes, there were failures, but as far as I can see, this season he is doing his job, except for a couple of races where he could have finished a little higher, " the manager said.


Szafnauer spoke about Perez`s lackluster performance in qualifying:


Checo`s strength has always been racing skill - he has never been a great qualifier. I rarely thought while racing: Why are you doing this? I can remember only once, but otherwise he showed himself very well when overtaking and did not make mistakes. He`s very, very good at it.


When he raced with Hulkenberg, Hulk was always ahead of him on one lap, but towards the end of the race Checo overtook him thanks to his tire work. He beat Hulkenberg to the championship from record for 1x2 predictions that season, largely due to his ability to save tyres. After 12 laps, Hulkenberg spoke on the radio: There are no rear tires left. But this never happened with Cheko.
